[C320-list] Adding a Microwave

I have hull #331 and it's equipped with a Samsung microwave. I believe it's a .8 cubic foot. Great storage area for miscellaneous stuff.

A couple of points.

Name on sides and home port on transom does not comply
with Coast regulations for documented vessels.

Sorry. Please do not argue with me about what your
opinion is, what your interpretation of the word
"together" means or what everybody in your marina has
done. That all carries no sway with the Coast Guard.
Nor, does the fact that most of the coasties on the
water probabaly agree with you help if you are cited
by the one officer that actually knows the right of
it.

I reveiwed the law myself and resolved the ambiguity
of what I have commonly seen with what the regs say by
personally getting the Coast Guard's documentation
section's own interpretation. They were very specific.
Both on the side or both on the transom and not one
one each. To the CG officials in DC, apparently close
is not near enough to together.

I now have big names on each of the sides and a
regulation satisfying four inch name and home port on
the transom. The name is between deck and swim
platform and home port is between platform and bottom.

On a related issue, I questioned if it was permissible
to locate the Number plate in the port cockpit locker
as I didn't want to put it in the woodwork in the
cabin. The reply "If the cockpit locker is a part of
the interior hull and it's clearly visible, it will be
acceptable."

The actual regs can be found at;

http://www.access.gpo.gov/nara/cfr/waisidx_01/46cfr67_01.html

Here is the relevent text;
" TITLE 46--SHIPPING

CHAPTER I--COAST GUARD, DEPARTMENT OF
TRANSPORTATION--CONTINUED

PART 67--DOCUMENTATION OF VESSELS--Table of Contents

Subpart I--Marking Requirements for Vessel
Documentation

Sec. 67.123 Name and hailing port marking
requirements.

(a) ...
(b) ...
(c) Recreational vessels. For vessels documented
exclusively for recreation, the name and hailing port
must be marked together on some clearly visible
exterior part of the hull.
(d) The markings required by paragraphs (a), (b),
and (c) of this section, which may be made by the use
of any means and materials which result in durable
markings, must be made in clearly legible letters of
the Latin alphabet or Arabic or Roman numerals not
less than four inches in height."

When I bought my boat a couple of years ago, part of the deal included a
bottom job, a hull wax and transport to my lake. The guy doing the bottom and
wax asked if I wanted the old name removed...I told him I did...thus
completing the De Naming ceremony!

I'm the proud new owner of a '96 C320, and she's scheduled to go in the
water this Thursday.

Can someone please let me know what brand and model microwave oven fits
into the galley cabinet?
I saw a Tappan microwave at West Marine that looked familiar from the
pics that I've seen in some of your albums, but I measured an opening
slightly smaller than the specs from Tappan, and I'm guessing that
there's some mounting bracket that I might want to install as well.

I emailed Catalina, who suggested that I contact the people at Seaward
Products.. they told me that their price would be ridiculous and
suggested that I just go to Wal-Mart..

Has anyone added a microwave, or did you all get it as a factory
installed option?
I'm wondering if the cabinet in the '96 is too small since I haven't
seen any 94, 95, or 96 C320s with the microwave...

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Ben Waltuck

Quentin,

Although not local to you, this guy does a great job on boat
names...http://www.boat-lettering.net/

Click on "For Your Approval" and you can see how he 'Photoshops' your
boat name lettering on a picture of your boat so that you can see how it's
going to turn out...

Samsung came with mine (hull#112, bought in 1994)...I've used it 3 times
in 12 years, it makes a great storage unit with a nifty digital clock!
