Jon, Bill Culbertson is exactly right about removing the table with base attached.  Six screws, it's a no-brainer.  I recommend that everyone with this type of sole pull the table to check for water under the sole.  As I said, those spaces (on our boat,) do not drain and will hold water.  The water will encourage mildew that will, eventually, ruin the sole finish.  

Perhaps the most important thing I did in refinishing the sole is to "paint" the underside of the sole with un-filled epoxy as a barrier against future moisture.  It's easy to do.

One thing I should mention is that the table base has a gas tube in it not unlike those on the hoods of some cars.  The base itself seems well made.  However, after pulling our base, the years of trapped water also caused rusting of the nut on the end of the gas tube on the underside of the base.  I was unable to remove this nut; but, did apply a coating of grease to protect it.
