[C320-list] Broach

Let's just say that I started to say:
"OK, the wind is too light, let's give up and take down the chute and
motor back." Halfway through that sentence the boat speed went for 1.8
knots to 7.1 knots (against a 3 knot current) in about three seconds.
Seas went from dead flat mirror like to 3 to 4 feet in about 30 seconds.
Unless you sail in SF Bay you wouldn't believe that sort of thing can
happen. Went from 3 knots of wind to over 20 in about 3 seconds flat.

We have a fair amount of experience racing with Doyle APC asymmetrical
sails on both our C320 and a prior boat, a Kelt 9 Meter racer/cruiser.
Some general observations ....... we primarily set the APC in lighter
wind conditions, i.e., 0 to 12 knots on beam reaching angles and up to
approx 18 knots on downwind legs. I believe our 150 is more effective
reaching in winds approx 12-18 knots whereas the APC becomes overpowered
and too hard to handle. The other observation is that tacking or jibing
the APC requires crew practice and the level of difficulty increases
with windspeed. Would like to hear of other owner's experiences with
asymmetrical sails cruising or racing. I should note that we've also
done well with a double-head rig on downwind legs.

Hey Stan, had our first interesting issue with the AS last night.
Quite a learning experience. Have flown it now well over 20
times and still working on the learning curve. Great sail
though, and after my diver frees the sheets from the prop it will
be up again this weekend.
