Joe,
If you've never done it b4 it might be a good idea to lub the winch at the same time.  Maintenance kits available from lewmar,  job is not that hard just be careful not to lose little parts.

 I got my new stripper rings for the Lewmar 44 cockpit winches. My question
is how to I unscrew the top ring to remove the drum to install the stripper
rings. Looks like there might be a special tool needed to unscrew, anything
else work?

   I added a cleat to the port side and do the same thing he's proposing.  I
don't suspect he's proposing this *while* flying a spin, but rather as a way
to get the halyard secured.  :)

Since I don't fly a spin, the halyard is not useful to have lead back to the
cockpit.  

The outhaul is a little more useful to have lead aft.  If we had a
loose-footed main, it'd be even more useful.

That could be interesting if you need to dump the spinnaker in a hurry.  Are
