[C320-list] spinnaker question - Crane

Jeff,
I was just at the top of the mast last weekend re-installing the annonometer that the crows had broken. I wished I'd know there we interest in the crane and a rubbing. while inspecting everything I did not see a bend in our crane.
On our previous boat we had a large bale that allowed the halyard block to easily move from side to side. That seemed like a much better solution. Though it still was best to drop the spinaker on the same side that it was hoisted.

Bruce,
I spoke to a guy from U.S. Spars at Strictly Sail yesterday. I told him about the crane. He didn't think the bend was a problem. He thought it probably wouldn't bend any farther and said that many cranes are pre-bent to the same angle that mine had adopted.
In any case, I'd still like a crane with a single hole or hoop in the center. I just happen to have the mast down on saw horses this winter, so if anyone comes up with a better crane this would be a good time for me to make the change.
I'll make a template if Jeff or Al can't do it.

The topic of using a spinnaker has been covered here before, as Wes Giles
said even Gerry Douglas recommends using one but I've hesitated purchasing
one because the only manufacturer I've seen making a crane is RigRite. The
problem with RigRite's crane is it has two offset holes (see Jeff's photo
below) and I would prefer one centered hole. The other issue is that the
RigRite product bends.
I would consider investigating having spinnaker cranes made that are
reinforced and have a single centered hole. I'm not ready to take my mast
down or pay someone to go up my mast so if anyone on the list has their mast
down and can (1) take a rubbing or provide a template of the top of the mast
where the crane would mount, (2) provide the specs for the four mounting
screws (size, threads, depth) or provide the measurements of a crane you
have on hand or have installed - I would take on the task of investigating
having cranes made. Just email me offline and I'll see what can be done -

Bruce,
I was told by a reliable source that I should install a crane, so I
installed it prior to buying my asym spinnaker. I can't comment on how well
the asym flies without the crane.
Here's a link to pictures of the crane and associated parts on the C320
site. I purchased the crane from RigRite. I'm not totally satisfied with
their product (see the second link). If you find another source please let
me know.
