Warren,

I'm pretty sure that if you plug most inverters into a hot outlet (powered 
by shore) the inverter is toast. I think this approach should work but you 
need to make sure that the outlet is not powered before connecting the 
inverter. Always open the "outlet" circuit breaker as a precaution.
