Allan,

The ACE antifreeze was on sale at the time and I'm the guilty party who
mentioned it to Warren. Actually, the cost to us was $2.99 each with a
$1.50 mail-in rebate so not too bad at $1:49 a gallon and it's fine for the
water supply system. The "expert" at our marina suggests winterizing the
engine raw water system with the stuff that runs about $13.00 a gallon which
we then cut with 50% water. I'm not sure what additives are in that brew
(the bottle is not in front of me) but we use it every year. The $5.00
stuff from West Marine that you reference will work but I'm more comfortable
using the high priced spread in the engine.

Warren - I was in an Ace Hardware store yesterday and saw what you
purchased. You bought Arctic Ban, a blend of ethyl alcohol, glycol,
denaturants, colorant and water. At $3.79 retail, it is not for engine use
and good only for marine and RV water supply systems. And it is pink. What
most of us purchase is the "pink stuff" from West Marine that goes for $5.00
per bottle (with a $1.00 rebate up to 12 bottles) but IS acceptable for
engine use and does not contain ethyl alcohol. So simply stating that "pink
stuff" is not acceptable for the engine is incorrect unless you know what
kind of pink stuff you are talking about. Nuff' said? - Allan

It was bought on-sale at an ACE Hardware Store. I had the bottle in front of
me when I wrote that message so I'm quite sure that's what the label said. I
didn't see anything about proof, though I'm sure it was probably not more
than 12% by volume. (:>) It surely didn't smell like my favorite scotch or
vodka or I would have bottled it. In any event, it's all in the boat now -

is French for "thank you.")
