Jack,

I am pretty certain on the cost for the slip - I have been paying for
it since April 2009. Check out http://www.pier39marina.com/sliprental.htm
which list the rates (plus check out http://www.pier39marina.com/
and http://www.pier39.com/index.cfm). I will tell you I was shocked
at the low cost, but I am not complaining. The facilities are
excellent, parking is well lit and secure, very safe area and I am
right down town where all the fun is. PLUS - Fantastic restaurants in
the area. Again, it is quiet here at Pier 39. Very silent after 9:00
PM. Yeah, I am stunned too.

And I am sure you know the most expensive homes are in the SFO area.

No need to sell my home. I live in a very large home in New Mexico (4
kids with me mind you, so it does not feel that large) with a
beautiful view of the Sandia Mountains (not to mention very stable
economy, my space research business is here, etc). Second home,
vacation home now, in Holland, is a good get away, however it will
become at rental again soon, so I won't be selling that.

However having the boat in SFO is wonderful. A great place for
sailing and relaxing. Plus when I am up in the area consulting -
about once a month - I have a very cheap place to stay in a fantastic
location.

Now each boat/Captain has different requirements:

* Crew: I run a Venturing Sea Scout ship, race and cruise with the
boat. Crew has run from just myself to up to 8 others staying on the
boat (yeah you read that correctly). Certainly when racing we run 4 -
6 on board. Cruising I have between 2 - 8 on the vessel.
* Launch: It is a pain for me for several reasons. Example 1 - I had
to leave for a flight at 4:00 AM. Needless to say would not want a
launch at 4:00 AM. Example 2: Though I use the shower on the boat, I
love the nice walk early in the morning to the showers at the club,
which is around 6:00 AM. Hate to use a launch for that. Example 3:
was at a design review at NASA until 11:30 PM. Add the drive, I was
not about to dingy it to the boat at 12:30 AM. Either way I love the
convenience of getting on and off the boat on a whim - especially when
working on it. Have I used a dingy? Yes, I own one. Used it at
anchorages and such, but no need for one parked at home base.
* Gear: depends on the crew size from minimal to lots. Plus food.
And if racing, we are moving on and off the boat an inventory of up to
8 sails (depends on race, conditions, etc).
* Using the head: Well I do training sessions on the boat. It is a
pain after a bit to send everyone back on the launch to use the head.
Now the guys go over the side sometimes, but it makes for an awkward
moment for the ladies in a marina.
* Kids: I have four of them (9, 13, 17, 19). Plus the Sea Scouts.
You get the idea. BTW - these kids took 1st place overall in a Spring
Race Series, beating some very good teams, all adults. Yeah, I was
shocked too! I had a nice cruise with 7 kids to Sausalito in July,
and they did wonderful under sail, especially when close hauled in 25
knots of wind.
* Laundry: My laundry facilities are in New Mexico. A bit expensive
of a commute.

Best Regards,
Andrew

I can tell you I love the spot very peaceful where I am at - like I
said no one shows up to their boat!
