Wow! What a lot of clever people we have out there with lines, straps,
hooks, and bends. Reminds me of an old sailor's poem I heard in my Navy
days.

While securing the sails and boom is a smart precaution, the only sure way
to prevent torn sails is to remove them. Our marina always makes this
recommendation in advance of a "named" storm. I have seen tightly furled and
secured head sails unrolled and even torn without unrolling when left on in
hurricane force winds. The wind only needs a scrap of an edge to grab before
major damage can occur. I've also seen a headsail so badly fouled that it
couldn't be unfurled. Always best to remove them.
