Tom, the two locations are quite different in terms of construction. The
keel being lead doesn't present structural risk. Catalina probably applies
some kind of coating (barrier epoxy) to provide adherence for the paint. The
rudder is a different story. I would ask if the chips on the rudder have
penetrated the fiberglass roving. If so, you need to follow a repair process
to replace the roving and epoxy the patch. I agree with Chris B., the West
System book makes it easy. For the keel, apply 5200 to close the chip then
paint.

I too, was very timid about working with those esoteric two-part epoxy
materials. Believe me, the stuff is wonderful. I now keep an inventory of
the stuff on hand for boat and home projects. It is easy and forgiving to
work with. Well, forgiving to a point. Once it sets-up it's done. However,
it is sandable, drillable, paintable. With the different hardners and
fillers, you can accomplish a patch on a wall or overhead. Wonderful stuff.

HI CHRIS , THANK YOU FOR YOUR REPLY. I WAS ON A MOORING ON THE LONG ISLAND
SOUND AND IT LET LOOSE. AS A RESULT I HAVE CHIPS ON MY KEEL AND RUTTER ON
THE PORT SIDE. THEY ARE 1/4 TO 3/8 WIDE AND MAYBE AS DEEP. I AM HANDY BUT
NEVER WORK WITH FIBERGLASS . I KNOW I HAVE TO FILL THEM IN , APPLY A BARRIER
COAT AND BOTTOM PAINT . WHAT ARE THE BEST MATTERIALS AND HOW TO DO THE JOB
??? OR SHOULD I JUST LET MY YARD DO IT ?? THANK'S TOM C 916

Hi Tom,
Welcome aboard. You just asked. Before anyone can give a really meaningful
answer, we need a bit more information on the problem. How big are the chips
in the keel and rudder, how deep, how many, where located, and how did they
get there? Are you handy with tools and have you done any fiberglass repair
work before?

There is a lot of experience in working on boats in the members of this
group and we are willing to help, so don't hesitate to ask for assistance
