[C320-list] New post...bottom paint-rudder showing white

Some manufacturers of rudders recommend the rudder be painted white. If painted a dark color, and
when the boat is out of the water, the sun will bake the rudder and it will delaminate. May take
8 - 10 years but it will happen. My 1999 was white and will stay that way. My last boat did
delaminate but I was fortunate and repaired it myself. Could be a costly mistake to paint it dark.
Replacing a rudder is not cheap.

Think I'd talk to Catalina and ask them what the ramifications are of dark paint.

Hi Robert,

On my year 2000 Catalina the rudder was initially painted white while the
hull was blue.  Many of the boats were commissioned this way and owners
changed the paint to match the hull.  What you see is probably the white
paint used originally on the rudder.

All:

See subject field.  While scraping my rudder, large paint flakes fell

off showing white beneath, which I believe is the fiberglass surface.

Can I simply sand and repaint, or is a more drastic procedure

indicated.  The hull only exhibits the usual flaking, indicating some

touchup sanding before repainting.  We've been considering completely

stripping the (2002) hull, just not this season.
