I am not sure about the color change in the oil. My practice is to change the oil & filter for Winter storage and I change it again before launch in the Spring. Some will say this is overkill but it works for me. As to the impeller puller. I remove the impeller in the Fall and reinstall it in the Spring. I do not have any problems with the removal.

I changed my engine oil and oil filter last October when I winterized  
he boat.  I checked the oil after I started the engine recently and  
he oil was a very deep colored black, not the look of new oil. Is  
his normal after a 6 month winter layover?  Should I change it again?
Also, is it worth it to purchase an impeller puller?  Does it work well?
