For lodging you may also want to try the Kent Narrows area accross the Bay
Bridge. There are quite a few good restaurants in the area as well as a
Holiday Inn Express, Hilton Inn, Best Western and a Sleep Inn. It is about
a 30 minute drive to Annapolis.

you are not ready,
you get towed out to the harbor! Most booths will start
their breakdown by
4:00 pm just to meet deadline.
As far as hotels go, as someone mentioned, the closer to
town the higher
  the rates.
An area called "Riva Road" is a good place to get a
decent hotel. Some of
the hotels have shuttle service back and forth to the
show for around $5.00
per person each way. I have been staying at the Hampton
Inn out by Riva,
and have always been happy with the property.

We're thinking of attending the Annapolis Sailboat Show,
but could only do

  Monday (10/10).
Based on your past experiences, are the vendors
scrambling to get out of
there, such that they are not really available all the
way to the 5 PM
closing time? We've seen that happen at other shows.
10-5 is not that much

time to take everything in as it is.

  Hi Karl,

As a vendor at the show I can tell you that although I
stay at my post
until the final bell, most booth vendors start packing
up by around 4 or so.

The boats of course cannot and do not move until 5, but
once the gun goes
off at 5 it is a sight to see. Many attendees party
around the harbor and
stick around to watch the exodus. The boats need to
scram pronto so that the
power boat setup can begin the next day.

Try to get an early start, you can see a lot in a day.

John, Karl, our much esteemed Commodore, recently did an
article for the
Mainsheet you'll probably see in the next issue on
servicing the windlass.
Maxwell recommends changing or at least checking the oil
level every 3
years, and clean/lube the shaft under the drum every
year. "Because the
unit is installed in the horizontal rather than the
vertical for which it
was designed, you cannot check the oil level unless you
remove it, because
the sight glass is at the top in the horizontal
installation."

I don't think mine had been serviced in maybe 15 years.
  I needed a puller
to remove the drum. If you lube the shaft every year or
so, it should come
off easily. Removing the unit is not difficult.
Getting to it is a pain.

i removed the inspection cover in the chain locker to
have a look at the
windlass. There was no oil visible throught the sight
glass and when I
removed it I could still see no oil. The bearing just
below the sight glass
seems to be running dry. I added about an ounce of hypoid
90 and it gurgled
into the machine and I still no oil is visible. I do not
  want to overfill
the windlass so how does one tell if the correct amount
of oil is in the
machine short of removing it? The windlass is a Maxwell
  500.

My manual says for our zone to use 10W-30 or 15W-40. Be
sure to use a
"heavy duty" oil specifically for diesel engines. The
industry rating is
  CF
  or better (I think.)

My manual and notes for the engine are on the boat but I
want to do an oil
change this weekend. Does anyone remember what type of
  diesel oil the
Perkins likes. I think I was using 10-40W diesel
Valvoline. Thanks, John

  Karl,

The power boat show follows the sail, the vendors will
be there.

John, that oil will work, any oil that is formulated for
diesel will
function okay.? Just be certain that the oil is for a
diesel because the oil is
a "heavy duty" because of the higher
  compression?pressures .? Ken? OBUOY,

It depends on what vendors you want to see. Some, like
me, do both shows.
All the sail-only related vendors leave after the Sail
show, including of
course all the boats. And the Powerboat Show probably
has about 30-40% fewer
booth vendors, it is a smaller show, especially in
recent years. So it is
  hit & miss.

Ok, thanks for all the input. So it sounds like the
Honda 2000 puts out
plenty of AC but the little 10amp charger (p.o.
replaced, I think he was in a
slip) is where the limit is to recharging this way. Am I
correct in
assuming that replacing the charger with either a 20amp
or 30amp charger will
decrease my charge time when using the generator? If so,
then I'd consider the
upgrade to a charger/inverter that would allow use of a
microwave for
short bursts. Btw, the alternator does do a much better
  job (stock alternator)
as we did motor out for a bit to do some sailing and it
  charged the
batteries much better than the battery charger did.
  ?
Lastly, has anyone replaced their battery charger with a
higher output
unit and care to make a reccomendation?
  ?
  Thx

  Hello Karl:

I've attended the Monday show and enjoy it more than the
other days. Less
people and the vendors are more willing to deal. You
also can get onto the
boats without waiting in long lines. Again, this is
just my experience.

We have a 40a Charles charger that does a great job.

Ok, thanks for all the input. So it sounds like the Honda

plenty of AC but the little 10amp charger (p.o. replaced,
I think he was in a

correct in
assuming that replacing the charger with either a 20amp
or 30amp charger will
decrease my charge time when using the generator? If so,
then I'd consider the
upgrade to a charger/inverter that would allow use of a
microwave for short
bursts. Btw, the alternator does do a much better job
(stock alternator)
as we did motor out for a bit to do some sailing and it
charged the
batteries much better than the battery charger did.

Lastly, has anyone replaced their battery charger with a
higher output
unit and care to make a reccomendation?

  Thx

  John,
I went with the Ocean Marine and am very happy. I've
had a small problem
with the lines crossing when bring the dingy up on the
heavy side. The
lines seem to want to rub. At the time I purchased
them, about 4 years
  ago
I was taking a technical writing class and wrote about
the install. I sent
it to OM and they liked it enough to use it for people
wanting to install
  it
on a 320. Ask them for it as it might help and if you
can't get it let me
know. I probably still have it somewhere. It was a
easy install. In fact
I also installed the same ones on a Cat 30 for a friend.
  Let me know if I
  can help.

Mike, there's a Marriott Courtyard at Ft. Mead that is
not far away.?
We've stayed there whenever we have gone to the boat
show.? There are lots of
  other sailors there too.

We're thinking of attending the Annapolis Sailboat Show,
but could only do
  Monday (10/10).
Based on your past experiences, are the vendors
scrambling to get out of
  there,
such that they are not really available all the way to
the 5 PM closing
  time?
We've seen that happen at other shows. 10-5 is not that
  much time to take
  everything in as it is.

Here is a link to Annapolis area hotels:

  http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotels-g29494-Annapolis_Maryland-Hotels.html

The prices correlate with proximity to Annapolis and
"upscale" vs. not.

I would advise moving quickly on a room, the ones close
to town fill up
well in advance for the show.

Wherever you stay, unless you have a friend in Annapolis
with an extra
parking spot, you should plan to drive to the Navy
  Marine Corp Stadium to park
and take the shuttle buses into the show. It works
  pretty well. The only
wrinkle this year is that Navy has a home game on the
  Saturday of the show.
There will be an alternate parking site but the show has
  not worked out
  where yet for this year.

If you (or Karl or anyone) makes it, stop by land booth
AB14 & say Hi.

  Good luck!

On my boat it is caused by the stainless steel wear pad
being mounted with
a slight overhang on the interior side of the threshold.
My wife and I
showed our near permanent shin scars to Jerry in
Annapolis. He said they moved
it on new boats but an inspection did not bear this out.
This list gave me
the solution of backing off the screws and mounting a
small white
weatherstrip from Home Depot under the wear pad with the
small round piece just
hanging over the threshold. It is permanent and protects
from hitting the wear
plate or the fiberglass. Our scars are almost healed
now!

I cut my shins almost every time I am on the boat. I

We finally made it to the boat yesterday to sail and we
looked around the
companionway trying to figure out what people were
getting bangged up on
and didn't see anything. Maybe they have changed
things. I fell down the
steps on July 2 but i was barefoot, had my hands full,
and the third step was
wet. It was 11 pm triple digit heat index. Too hot to
enjoy sailing.

My wife has the habit of negotiating companionway steps,
and boat to docks
with her hands full! She has come to grief on more than
one occasion and
has finally learned...until next time! Rule of thumb for
safety... one hand
for you one hand for the boat... works every time.
