My present compass is located in the back of the closet of the aft bunk. It is not centered on the boat and it faces the stern but I didn't have any problems with.

Since I was having all sorts of trouble with the damn thing I went on the web site and and found that the prefered mounting site was in the bilge right about where the galley opening is amidships so I moved it there-without a whole lot of improvement in course keeping. When I installed the X5 I moved it back to the aft lazerette location for ease of mounting. As I said before, the new unit works very well.
