I shared this note with my diesel mechanic -- his reply:

bad idea. Just replace the push button.
The key switch as it is activates main power and the glow plug relay. 
Changing to a 3 function key switch will cause loss or full on of the glow 
plug circuit.

>From a frugal perspective...how long did that $20 push button last the first 
time?

We have just had a problem where the engine starter button didn`t release,
causing the starter motor to be driven by the flywheel at a more than
healthy speed, and burning out. It didn`t take long.
My intention is to replace the ignition switch with a 3 position keyed
switch and get rid of the push button starter.
Does anyone know of a legible wiring diagram for the starter switch, water
temp, fuel gauge etc.  The one available in the manual is almost impossible
to read.
