[C320-list] Locating new thru-hull for A/C

Hi Steve,

On my AC I also had occasional problems with the pump losing prime
especially if I returned from a sail that I had excessive heeling. I
eventually installed a "T" fitting in the water line right after the AC
pump. I installed a hose to the fitting with a valve in it and a hose that
ends right under the stuffing box. If I have a prime issue I just open the
valve for a second or two until water starts to flow from it and then shut
it off.

Hi Warren,
One of our friends has hull #93. When he put in the A/C, they located the
thru hull and pump under the drawers (under the sink). The A/C unit is
located in the port locker in the cockpit. They located the discharge in
the port side ... They have had some issues where the pump would not always
prime. The length of hose from the thru hull to the pump is very short
(24"). If they get a bubble in the line (from bumpy water) there is not
enough water to keep the pump primed and overcome the head to push the water
to the discharge (which is above the pump about 12").

On my boat (#1029) we located the thru hull near the thru hull for the
engine. Our pump is under the aft berth and the discharge is thru the stern
below the swim deck. We have never had priming problems.

On hull #93, they were able to route the hose under the floor and back to
the locker.

I hope this helps.

Thanks, Ken. I, too, have an available thru-hull as we don't flush with sea
water. I'm wondering how you routed the hose back to the A/C. That's the
mystery I can't solve.

Warren,  On my former hull #219 I used the existing hole that fed the head.
I placed a  Tee on the thru hull and ran the hose to a cut-off then to the
a/c.  Worked fine for the reverse cycle heat/air unit.  I installed the
compressor in the starboard lazzerett.  Ken

I'd like to hear from anyone with a '93-'95 hull about locating a new
thru-hull for A/C in the shaft alley and the strainer/scoop you may have
used on the hull.

The alley in these older models don't have near the room the later models
have.  However, I'd like to not clutter up the area by the packing nut as it
is already a b(*&^ to drain the primary fuel filter.  A typical boat
conundrum.
