[C320-list] Schaefer roller furling

I cleaned/ flushed my bearings last season and the furling systems is working well. I'm still on the hard with my mast down so a swap out of the drum would be a snap. I do like the idea of flushing holes, so my question is, couldn't I pop a hole in the drum myself and save the replacement costs ? Obviously I would remove the drum to keep any drill shavings out of the bearing race. What do you think?

I did it by myself, but there are a couple of points where an extra pair of hands would be helpful while lining up the locking pin and supporting the foil. I simply put a rolling hitch on the foil with the halyard and used it to support the weight of the foil on the stay.
