[C320-list] Main Sail Mast Furler

David,
My Boom Vang does not appear to have sufficient strength to lift the boom -
just enough to keep it from coming to rest on the cabin top. Having sailed
until recently on San Francisco Bay with heavy swells and gust I stopped
using the Topping lift except at the dock to keep the boom steady. Twice
while tacking in what is affectionately referred to as the Potato Patch the
Topping Lift wrapped around the back stay and caught in the splitter -
resulting once in pulling the Boom Vang plate out of the mast. The second
time I saw what was happening and got into irons before a reoccurrence of
the vang plate pull out. My understanding is the Topping Lift does nothing
while sailing and it should not be under any tension as it would distort the
sail shape. Thus I unshackle the Topping Lift at the dock only re-attaching
when putting her to bed at night. Saline was rigged with the Topping Lift
cleated to the starboard side of the mast. As an old f--t my wife doesn't
like me going up on the deck or especially the cabin top when on the briny.
Got to look to see what would be involved to lead the Topping Lift into the
cockpit. Doesn't solve the problem of keeping the Topping Lift attached to
the boom while sailing, but recently I moved Saline to Marina del Rey and
Santa Monica Bay is a new world of sailing; relatively flat water, gentle
breezes and sun where the Topping Lift will probably behave without undue
attention.

Steve

Hi David,
Thanks for the response. I assume you lift the boom using the topping lift.
Have you led the topping lift back to the cockpit?

This is exactly the same behavior with our Selden In-Mast Furler. We raise
the boom up a bit and the sail furls with ease. We never use a winch to
furl.

and retract as easy as I think it should and as others do. There apparently
desirable boom positioning required as others have reported here. I also
found there is one correct way to hook on the foot and at least one wrong
way. The wrong way makes for too large a wrap so have a look at that
especial as you mention this is a recent occurrence.

Would greatly appreciate advice.
