[C320-list] Hot water tank-draining tank

That would only be true if the liquid were just expanding.  But ice doesn't
work that way in my experience.  It would freeze at the coldest parts
(outside surfaces) and work inward.  As the whole thing freezes, it won't
easily change shape to fit the air space above, it'll expand outwards
sideways and then upwards in the middle when it can't expand horizontally
any more.  It really depends on where the coldest surface is, which is
probably the air gap which forms top ice that wants to act like a plug.

As Allan mentioned, the key is to remove the check valve and vacuum the
water out through that fitting with the drain valve open. You'll be
completely amazed how much water comes out after the drain stops dripping!
It's at least 2 gallons, but I believe it's more...

I don't bother with the compressor (or the pink stuff) and we have no water
taste issues.  We also vacuum out the water lines and the water tanks.  It's
pretty easy to do the way our boat is plumbed (with the tank valves moved to
under the galley sink).

Surely there is only a problem with water freezing when it is in a confined
space?

You can freeze water in a thin plastic bottle and it doesn't split - so long
as there is room for expansion

So I would have thought that any significant reduction of volume of the tank
would be adequate without the need to totally empty it?

Better safe than sorry though, I guess
