[C320-list] windlass

The trick I use (in addition to what Bill just mentioned) is to take a handful of paper towels and jam them in the space below the filter. I also put a few paper towels inside the ziplock bag before I slide it over the filter.

To minimize any mess, I punch two small holes in the filter with a sharpened nail. One on the lower side of the filter and another one higher up on the filter. I let most of the oil drain out into the ziplock with a handful of paper towels inside. Then it spins off with very little mess.

As for the "oil-boy" pump can, it works great. But go to home depot and buy 18" of 1/4" copper tubing used for hooking up your home fridge's Ice Maker. Straighten it out and jam it in the end of the plastic tube of the oil pump can. Now you can feed it straight down to the bottom of the oil pan and drain much more of the oil out. The flexible plastic tube wants to curve around, especially if the oil is warm, and won't stay on the bottom of the oil pan so it's really hard to get all the oil out that way.

Cheers!

One trick that I use for the horizontal oil filter once it is loosened with a filter wrench is to grab it through a quart ziploc. You can scooch the lip of the open end of the ziploc mostly underneath the filter touching the engine. As you loosen and it starts to ooze most (not all) of the oil will get caught by that ziploc lip and drain into the bag. And once it finally comes loose altogether you turn the bag+filter 90 degrees so that it is upright with the open end at the top. Then you can deposit it into whatever container you've readied to hold it. I don't bother zipping the ziploc but I suppose you could. In fairness, it sounds easier than it is because once oil starts oozing into the bag, the bag gets slippery inside and it is harder to turn the filter through the slippery bag. It is doable but takes patience.
Using this approach, I've not bothered with pads on the engine pan because there are only a few drips & drizzles which I can wipe up with a paper towel or two.

 Diane,

The first time you do the oil change, you'll make a mess but you will learn some lessons. Next time will be better. You have to work out the process. Go to Home Depot and buy a box of latex or rubber gloves before you start, and LOTS of paper towels.

Simple Green is wonderful for cleaning up petroleum spills and drips.

Before you remove the oil filter, lay lots of pads under the engine. Also have a plastic container handy into which you can place the filter in case any more oil dribbles out.
