[C320-list] Fw: Dutchman system monofilament

I switched to a lazy jack/stack pack combination in 07. When hoisting the sail the battens frequently snagged on the jack lines. Even when the boat was directly into the wind didn’t guarantee a clean deployment of the main sail without on occasional snag. When dousing the sail I had to slowly lower the sail so it fed all the way into the bag without spilling over onto the deck. Also had to leave the cockpit to assist with getting the sail in the bag several times. Never dealt with either of these issues when using the Dutchman system. Absolutely no interference on deployment and dousing of the sail, all while being safely positioned in the cockpit of the boat. In my opinion, the hassle factor of using lazy jacks/stack pack was much greater then it was when using Dutchman system on a fully battened main sail. I switched back to the Dutchman after 6 weeks of use on the other system. I do have to reinstall the sail cover after each sail and when I do I lower the topping lift and stow the Dutchman monofilament under the sail cover so it’s not continuously exposed to UV light. Last much longer.

Sometimes when raising the sail, if you are not directly into the wind, the halyard will catch on a Lazy Jack, and we have to bring the bow through the wind to be able to continue raising the sail. It is such a small inconvenience, though, for the ease of dropping the sail.

That is no longer an issue, and I won't own another boat without it. Also, I don't mind giving up a bit of performance. I am interested in getting there, not how fast I get there.

I do a fair amount of single handing, so I need a system that gets the main down in reasonably good order without my having to scramble around a lot
