[C320-list] New Dodger

Yes, there is limited room for standard winch handles on the cabin top, that is primarily because we had them design it so we are looking over it when driving the boat standing up at the helm. So, I bought a pair of adjustable west marine winch handles and keep them on the smallest setting and just keep them in our cabin top winches when sailing.

The T-Top feature that turns the dodger into a companionway Bimini is really great when it is hot out. Also, as the other C320 IA member said, the aft and side handrails are very nice to have when moving about the boat while sailing too.

They come this way each year and measure, build and install over a couple of weeks. I’m interested if your dodger interferes with turning the handles on your cabin-top winches. My current set-up requires me to use a smaller winch handle. Also, a block mounted on the boom rubs on front edge of the dodger in certain conditions. I would love to get an Iverson but I don’t think I can wait 2-3 years.

It has Strata Glass panels that are optimally clear and we can unzip the panels and just have the top of the dodger like a mini-bimini over the companionway. Iversons Designs calls this their T-Top Model. Well worth it for those few hot PNW summer days:

We also mounted a 125W Solbian solar panel to the Bimini that allows us to stay at anchor for over a week in the Puget Sound and San Juan/Canadian Gulf Island summers. The flexible solar panel stows under our aft queen mattress when not in use as it mounts with removable Fastex fasteners. Super slick. You can see all of my other upgrades too (Wallas Heater Install, 4D Battery and Charger Upgrades, Washdown Pump Install, and Weaver Davits) in our Owners Photos section of our C320IA website.

>>> If you live in Seattle, the premier dodger maker is Iverson in Olympia. They cover a lot of territory and will come to your boat, pattern the new dodger, measure for all of the clearance needs, build it at their shop, come back to your boat and install it. Their dodgers are of the highest quality and a patented design. Compared to the original Catalina dodger that we had, the Iverson is a Cadillac vs. the original chevy. They have a website with many pictures, including installations on a Catalina 320 in their gallery. The downside is they are very expensive, and very busy. Typically, you get on their list and wait about 6 months or more for them to get to you. But, they are worth it in my opinion. Their design avoids any framing poles in the field of view as they make the dodger curvature on each side. Most people go for both the dodger, the bimini over the helm and then get the panels for full enclosure. This is what we did. We sail with the dodger and bimini in place, but have the option to zip the other pieces in at a destination to create that much more liveable space. We love our new dodger and highly recommend the folks at Iverson. If you go walk the marina docks in Seattle, you will see Iverson dodgers on many sailboats. If you aren’t in a hurry, and can afford the price, you will be very happy with their work.
