[C320-list] Which Racor Filter?

Regarding: " It only makes sense to me to have a fine "finish" filter on the engine and a more coarse filter in the Racor (not a 2 micron)."

We have always used the opposite strategy. :)

We've always used the R24S (2micron) in the Racor and a 10micron filter on the small engine mounted one.

Why?
1. The Racor has way more surface area than the small engine mounted filter.
2. Because I ONLY want to have to change a single larger filter if it were to clog and I know it'll be the Racor.
3. The engine mounted filter is only there to protect the injectors and catch anything damaging that slips past the Racor filter during a change.

I only change my engine mounted one every 3 years but change the main Racor each season. The engine mounted filter is typically clean at that point, but sometimes has a slight bit of buildup.

If you do as you suggest, you'll always have to change the small engine mounted filter if there's a clog and may also have to change the Racor, but you won't know for sure what condition it's in till you get it removed. I think there would be virtually no chance that the Racor would clog and not also have clogged the small engine mounted one having a finer filter.

If I were to have a clog underway, it'll be relatively easy for me to change the Racor and continue on because I have shutoffs on both the inlet and outlet connections of the Racor. I'll be fairly sure that anything that passes the Racor will also pass the engine mounted one and not be too large for the injectors to handle.

Dave-
I currently us the R24T (10 micron) and a 10 micron on the engine (NAPA 3368). The R24P is 30 micron and the R24S is 2 micron. I think the Perkins OEM fuel filters are 2 micron, but I'm checking that. I actually ordered some of them but haven't installed one yet. It only makes sense to me to have a fine "finish" filter on the engine and a more coarse filter in the Racor (not a 2 micron).

On the Catalina Direct site today, I came across their listing for a Raycor R15T, which filters to 10 microns. Catalina Direct's description for the R15T includes this language:

"Be careful which filter you use. There are several replacement elements available that look identical. For example, there is what appears to be the same filter that only filters down to 30 microns. It leaves particles in the fuel that are too big and may clog the engine's filter. Another version filters to only 2 microns. This is filtering particles from the fuel that are so small it may clog almost immediately, leaving you without power soon after replacement.”

The 2-micron language sounds like a reference to the R24S. What do you think? Is the R15T a better option than the R24S? Thanks.
