Battery Charger

Hi All,
I got rid of our Newmar charger ( The original unit) and installed a Victron 30 amp, 3 stage unit. It is doing all the right things so far. I also run a Victron solar charger too (15 amp) with 2 x 80 watt panels.

Cheers,

We use hand signals, when the admiral is aboard that is. No batteries, nothing to fall overboard?very simple?works for us.

Thanks everyone for your comments about batteries, starting batteries, and solar panels. It was very informative and I made a spreadsheet to look for consistencies. As suspected there aren't any!

When the initial problem occurred I had tested the batteries with a hydrometer. Because I had just returned from a long weekend they were not fully charged and the readings looked consistent. I just retested them with the hydrometer again after several days of being at the dock. The problem is the batteries. Every cell but one is only at 12.75 and the final cell is at 12.15. Am going to call Dyno Batteries and see if they can put them on their charger and bring them back up (they are 5 years old). If not, I'm investing in new batteries. Additionally, a few buddies of mine think the Newmar Three Stage Smart Charger the PO put on is a piece of crap. I looked at when the PO purchased it and realize it's 16 years old. It's possible the charger is not doing it's job.

Since I'm still working (unlike the rest of you!) and live in the Pacific NW I haven't been taking long trips. It's super easy to just sail on Puget Sound and do overnights here and there. Now that I'm pushing to do more long trips I'm spending more time figuring out my energy consumption.

New question is.....any thoughts on a good battery charger/inverter? Magnum has been suggested.

Hope all you guys figured out your pleated shade issues!!

While you can get some power on cloudy days, no where near what you get on sunny days. Just something to take into consideration in our area.

Without this, the standard engine set up is an automotive style alternator that won?t fully charge deep cycle batteries very well with intermittent engine use. While island hopping in the San Juan?s I sail as often as I can, but I also recognize that there are times I have to motor and I want to take advantage of those times to charge my batteries. At about an hour of motoring, I can restore batteries to 90% typically. This allows me to spend 2-3 days at anchor easily without need for the sun to be out for charging batteries via solar.
>
> In terms of the battery banks, I combined my two 4D banks and put them on the battery 2 terminal. This gives me a usable 200 Amp hours of house bank. I then installed a separate automotive type battery on bank #1 that is dedicated to engine starting only. Typically, I don?t have to use this battery, but it?s peace of mind for always being able to start the engine. The starting battery on my boat fits in the same area as the two 4D batteries under the starboard setee. The automotive battery fits just forward of the other two in a dedicated battery box. The other thing I installed was a Link battery monitor for the house bank that tells me my amp hour usage and current draw at any time. With this instrument, there is basically no excuse for not knowing your battery state of charge.

I have contemplated adding solar, but adding panels and wiring that I?ve considered is somewhat messy and I?ve not felt a need to really go that route given my cruising style.

I did this last year while getting new standing rigging. I was happy to find the deck area around the chainplates were solid fiberglass. Not balsa wood core. I have a 2000 but I?m not sure when they made this change.

Warren?s tips about remembering the number of turns to loosen the bolts and the position of the washers are key to making the job much easier. I used an adjustable wrench and progress was slow but it worked fine.

I ended up having to do one side over because the weight of the tie rod broke the seal. The second time I put a clamp on the tie rod where it met the fiberglass behind the settee. This took the weight of the tie rod off the tang while it dried. So far, no leaks.

I used bedding compound for this but I am moving to butyl tape for all future bedding projects.

Michael,

They also make what are called "crow's foot" wrenches. Essentially, it is the business end of an open-end wrench that you connect to an extension and then your ratchet. They are useful for these hard-to-reach places where you need to get some torque. Finding a size that big might be a problem, but I thought I would mention it.

Three possible solutions for tightening the tie-rods.

First, you can get deep-well sockets. I found a 27MM socket at Grainger.

https://www.grainger.com/product/SK-PROFESSIONAL-TOOLS-27mm-Alloy-Steel-Socket-with-20K043<https://www.grainger.com/product/SK-PROFESSIONAL-TOOLS-27mm-Alloy-Steel-Socket-with-20K043>

I also found one much cheaper at Northern Tool.

https://www.northerntool.com/shop/tools/product_200654072_200654072<https://www.northerntool.com/shop/tools/product_200654072_200654072>

For the one-time low-torques use you're going to have, the cheaper version is probably fine. Frustratingly, neither one says how deep the socket actually is, so it's hard to tell whether it would be deep enough to fit over the tie-rod end.

There is also such a thing as a "pass-through" socket set. I bought one at Grainger for another project.

https://www.grainger.com/category/tools/sockets-bits/socket-sets?attrs=Item%7CPass-Thru+Socket+Set&filters=attrs<https://www.grainger.com/category/tools/sockets-bits/socket-sets?attrs=Item%7CPass-Thru+Socket+Set&filters=attrs>

It only went up to 22MM, so might not be big enough for the tie-rods. But if you can find one for the size of the nuts, it allows the bolt to pass through the ratchet, and covers any length of bolt.

The other alternative would be to find a box ratchet wrench. Here's one from Grainger, again:

https://www.grainger.com/product/WESTWARD-1-1-8-54PN37<https://www.grainger.com/product/WESTWARD-1-1-8-54PN37>

You might be able to find one cheaper. But because of the thickness of the ratchet mechanism, there may be some places a socket would fit or a plain box wrench, but not a box ratchet wrench.

I agree with Dave that you don't want to tighten the tie-rod too much, because it would tend to pull the fitting down through the deck. But I would think you'd want a little bit of pre-load to counter the upward pull on the windward shrouds when the boat is on the wind. If anyone knows of a specification I'd love to see it.

Good luck, and let us know how it all works out. This list is an incredible source of information that any one of us may need one day.

I had one rod that was loose to the point I could shake it back and forth and hear a slight rattle. I snugged it up just enough with an open end wrench to eliminate the play. I think if you torque it too much you risk cracking the deck at the chain plate (not good).
I think I read an earlier post about just snugging it up. Dave Hupe

I need to snug down the tie rods for the standing rigging on my boat. (The rods we all have on the interior of the boat that anchor the rigging to the hull behind the settees.). I believe the fore and aft tie rod nuts are 3/4 inch. Does anyone know the exact size of the center tie rod nut? I measured it with calipers but its pretty difficult to get to cleanly, so I?m not sure if it?s an inch and 1/16th, an inch and 1/8th or possibly 27mm.

I?m also looking for some advice on a source for extra long sockets since the rod extends about two and a half inches beyond the nut. I can get a combination wrench on the fore and aft rods, but the ability to turn the wrench is very limited. I?m guessing the center rods, with an even larger wrench, will be even more restricted so it seems a socket would be the way to go?. any experience in this area? I?m guessing there are no standard torque specs for these nuts but if someone knows otherwise that would also be a great help.

Thanks for the help,

Sara,

I have been happy with my Promariner ProNautic 1230P. The one thing I will say is my Newmar charger was located in the port aft locker on the wall that also serves as the back wall of the galley. Because of the different mounting configuration pattern, I ended up reusing two mounting holes and I had to drill two new holes. The other issue I had is that the 1230P would not accept the larger wire diameter (maybe 6 or 8 AWG, I can't remember now) that feeds the batteries. So, I had to bridge from the larger wires to an AWG (either 12 or 14) that would attach to the charger. It was suggested on this site to use a terminal block that is covered that steps from the one size wire to the other.

>From one who is still working to another, I hope this helps.

Just need to recognize that the sun power in our area is nothing like that of someone who lives in Florida, for instance.

She has never had a starter battery. After a weekend rafting with friends I did some analysis on my battery usage. It goes without saying that the refrigeration was the biggest draw. I got nervous that the batteries would not have enough CCA to start the engine so I turned off the refer the night before heading home. I did charge the batteries for a few hours on day 2 but was still not comfortable with how fast the batteries were being depleted. I have a few, somewhat unrelated questions, as I figure out what?s going to be added to the boat next.
