Jerry- The obvious questions are how old is your packing and have you tried slightly tightening the packing nut? With the newer type packing (like Gore GFO https://www.amazon.com/Gore-GFO-Marine-Shaft-Packing/dp/B015HU7EQA), you should be able to have very little dripping while motoring and none when idle.
