[C320-list] Chesapeake Havre De Grace

Troy,
We wish we had more time to explore the Chesapeake.  We were doing 6 kts and just kept North.  I think, if we had all summer we couldn't see half the Chesapeake.  Hitting the highlights as best we can.  Wanted to do the Northern part this (first) trip so maybe next year or so we can do the Southern part more thoroughly.  That is why we are "racing" north to explore up here some.  Then we plan to meet up with our sailing club on the way back. Hope to (at least)make St Micheal and Onancock on the way back south. Our sailing club is leaving NC around May 1 for Chesapeake and they have even less time so they will not likely make it this far north.
You never know but we just can't see it all.  What do you mean by Northeast?  We are open to suggestions of where/what to see north of Annapolis.

Thanks,

Scott Westwood scottwestwood at bellsouth.net C (919)- 819-9794

I haven't plugged in for a year after installing 320 watts of solar. Fridge runs full time.We are five weeks into a cruise with no problems, despite tv, music, anchor light, charging various appliances.Batteries are topped off by early afternoon. The problem with plugging is is you share a ground with all of the other boats. If one is wired poorly, your metals and zinc erode unless you have an isolator.Jack BrennanSonas, 1998 Catalina 320Currently at Boot Key Harbor, MarathonSent from my Galaxy

Scott

I think Tidewater Marina is your best bet.  There aren?t any resort style
marinas in HdG.  Lot's of great folks there to give you ideas about where
to go or what to see in HdG.

I'm surprised you will be in HdG so quickly but I guess I wasn?t paying
attention to your plan/schedule.  We spent 5 years exploring the upper bay
and NEVER made it is far south as Solomons.  So...you will be passing a
lot of great stops in order to arrive in HdG so rapidly.  Honestly...if you
were prioritizing places to see...neither HdG or Northeast would be in my
top 10 places to visit between Solomons and The top of the bay.

Regards

Troy

Has anyone on the list had experience with the Raymarine wheeldrive
autopilot clutch releasing when trying to turn to starboard?  The wheeldrive
works fine when it attempts to turn the wheel to port, but when the turn is
to starboard the clutch releases.  Any ideas how to fix this?

Does anyone else have spiderweb hairline cracks on thier transom, from a few inch's aft of the cleat, down across the curve of the transom? If so, what year is your boat.

A well known issue Mark. I used a bungee cord for a while but eventually gave up and fitted a below deck ram

I had the same problem.  In my case the handle hit the instrument
housing so it wouldn?t fully engage.  I just cut off the end of the
handle so it goes ?over center? and that seems to work fine

I can't recommend solar enough.  I installed 2 solar panels (160 Watts
each, 9 amps each) 2 years ago, single best upgrade I have done for
Canuck.  I'm on a mooring, so shore power is not an option.  Additionally,
our winters are long in Chicago, and I used to haul the batteries off her
each fall to keep them warm in the basement, and on a trickle charge.  Now
I don't have to do that, and my back thanks me.  I did a very simple set up
on the wiring, I only have 2 4D batteries, ran 1 panel to each battery
(with a regulator between each panel and battery, of course).  My panels
are mounted on dinghy davits, the solar wires run through the cowls on the
transom, and then passed through the port locker, and mounted my regulators
on the back side of the "bread box" cabinet that sits right above the
fridge in the galley, putting them right next to the shore charger.  I then
tied in to each battery with jumper wires from the regulators to each
battery post on the shore charger.  Both my solar regulators and the
charger had built in diodes to prevent current back flow, so was all an
easy set up.  The hardest part of the whole shebang was building the mount
on top of the davits.  But it's now held 2 years, plenty of sailing, gust
on the can up to 50 kts, and last winter's dump of 3' of snow. in a week,
so I now think my build is rock solid.  I run fridge while sailing, and
often autopilot, done plenty of night sails with cabin and nav lights on
(but all lights are now led, all of them), batteries always charged by
early afternoon the next day (I still never leave the switch on both, and
do alternate batteries between sails).

My solar regulators are victron, and love the built in blue tooth so I can
connect my phone to them and know state of batteries.

This is my 5th season of owning Canuck, and I've never once plugged into
shore power, not even sure if the shore charger even works anymore.

There likely is  excess friction in your system. In our case the locating
pin on the pedestal was pressing against the disc and after freeing it up
with a Dremel tool and readjusting the clutch, it was better, but I still
kept a small bungee cord on it. Finally installed a below deck ram and it
is much like the difference between a funky compass and a GPS..., quieter,
straighter and stronger....

Did you install an entire new autopilot, or did you just add the ram and remove the wheel?
