[C320-list] Keel bolt primer

Hi Ferris,
I've never heard of putting a zinc primer on stainless steel. I've typically used zinc phosphate on galvanized fasteners that have for one reason or another lost part of the galvanizing (like hitting with a mallet or cutting with a saw).
I don’t think it would be good to be coating the keel boats with anything but I'd be interested in others thoughts.
Also, I'd avoid aggressively (abrasive) going after the surface rust on the nuts and keel bolts as your really don't want to make a lot of surface scratches that give rust and advantage.
Best,
Bruce

Subject: [C320-list] Keel bolt primer

Hi All,

The purchase survey for Argo(#505) suggested I remove surface corrosion on the keel bolts and coat them with a zinc based primer. It appears the previous owner was not into bilge hygiene 😂

I’m wondering if others have done this, and if a zinc primer actually does any good? The bilge is now typically quite dry (having fixed a number of leaks), but I still can get a little fresh water after heavy rains/certain winds. This winter has been a wet one In SF!

Thx,
Ferris
