[C320-list] Is the starter motor the culprit?

Also, one thing to note is that deep cycle batteries and dual purpose deep cycle/starting generally make poor starting batteries for diesels. It you have the option and have ruled out the wiring and connectors, try a car starting battery and see if your results change.  With a new deep cycle group 27, our engine turned over like the battery was low.  With a car battery, it spun fine.Jeff

A quick check, Just use the negative cable on your car jumper cables to connect just the battery  negative to the motor itself. Then try starting. IF the negative (ground) connection is the problem the engine should start right up.  IF it's doesn't start right up then the issue is likely the positive circuit.  You might also note the voltage on the panel before and after the jumper cable hook up. It'll jump up if the ground is an issue.PatPat Tormeys/v Blues SkiesNewport RI-----Original Message-----From: C320-list <c320-list-bounces at lists.catalina320.com> On Behalf Of Bob Hoyt via C320-listSent: Wednesday, March 29, 2023 7:18 AMTo: Troy Dunn <troutwarrior at gmail.com>Cc: Bob Hoyt <rehoyt at gmail.com>; C320-List at catalina320.com; c320-list at lists.catalina320.comSubject: Re: [C320-list] Is the starter motor the culprit?I appreciate the tip about the engine glow plugs so I plan to replace them BUT the issue is that the engine barely turns over with two six volt golf cart batteries in series or one Group 27 12 volt battery. That suggests decreased power somewhere in the system. Of course, because it is a boat, the cause might be multifactorial. I'll also remove all wires going into the starter and solenoid and clean them well. Thanks for the suggestionsBobOn Tue, Mar 28, 2023 at 7:57 PM Troy Dunn <troutwarrior at gmail.com> wrote:> Good stuff Guy!>> About that tinned marine wire….
