Hello Scott:

refer to this publication on the Catalina 320 Association.

https://c320.org/article.php/20060212151611361

I just performed this last week and also replaced the thermostat which was
appropriate for the last time the system was flushed.

The attached instructions are detailed, accurate, and easy to perform.
Just one addition that I would add. You can use a shop vacuum cleaner that
can draw water. Apply a tapered hose end attachment to the suction end of
the vacuum hose. With the vacuum, you can such water out of the coolant
system loop into the fresh water heater. Remove one hose for the fresh hot
water heater loop that runs to the engine. Loosen the clamp on the return
end ( the other hose from the hot water heater) to allow air to escape.
You do not have to totally remove it. Insert the tapered vacuum fitting
into the lumen of the detached hose and suck the water out of that section
of the coolant loop into the shop vacuum. That will remove all of the
coolant from the fresh hot water heater. Then reclamp the two hoses back
and refill the system. Know this. You will have to keep the radiator cap
off and when running the engine with the new coolant after you first fill
up you will have to slowly add more coolant to the system to feed the
supply into the freshwater loop. It will inevitably have an air block.
You may have to shut the engine down for a bit. That is why the person who
sent the attached article complained about a brief period of an overheating
engine alarm. That was an air block in the coolant loop which has to be
worked out of the system. DO not allow the engine to overheat for very
long. Shut it down. let it cool a bit. Start it up again and add more
coolant mixture until all is running to temp. You may have to repeat this
a few times.
