[C320-list] Edson Post Recoating

On a previous boat, I had no interest in removing the pedestal from the boat. It looked like a hell of a lot of work.

So I cleaned and sanded it in place, removed the compass, taped vulnerable parts and used one-part Easypoxy paint. It looked fine and lasted for years.

Easypoxy is fairly durable, particularly if you’re not walking on it. You can also use the marine Rustoleum paint, which in my experience is a little better and much cheaper. The best part is that if you scratch the pedestal, it’s a simple matter to sand and repaint.

Just for the record, never, ever paint a boat of any size with one-part paint. If you do, you will be sentenced to repaint it every four or five years because it doesn’t stand up to direct sun, walking, dings and drops. The pedestal is easy to do. The deck, however, is a @#$%^^&. Topsides are easier, but still a lot of work.

Baby your gelcoat with Woody Wax while you can. It’s worth it.

Just had mine re-done (Picked it up this morning). IMHO have it done professionally. I lucked out and got a retired guy to do it and I was his last job. Used his last "extra-fine" sand (or get them to use other fine material or it will pit). He said he used primer and Epoxy paint then some other coat. Looks like new. I plan to upload pics and a short writeup. Only cost me $100 but other retail places ranged from $250 to $350. Took a few days once he started. Retail "Sanding and Coating" stores might be able to dry the coats faster but not sure?? Also make sure to cover the inside of the holes where the needle bearings go for the wheel shaft. Also the whole for the break shaft.

Thanks,
