[C320-list] Sail Slides

If your main is really hard to raise, check that you have not fouled
you Main Halyard with you topping lift. Last year sailing with my
brother, he noticed that it appeared that the Main Halyard was across
the topping lift. Since I am always under the Dodger pulling up the
Main I never really see the action of the Halyard at the top of the
mast. I could not believe the difference once they were uncrossed. I
assume that this occured while putting the Main and Dutchman back on at
the beginning of the season.

I haven't followed them up, but there is no evidence that they remain
more than
a few days or if they even make it up to the top intact.

I spray both sides of the slides with the extention tube to keep from

lube. I stick a saturated cotton ball in the track above the top slide

the main up. Usually twice a year.

I also went with the Strong Track system a couple of years ago and the
sail is
no easier to raise now then it was before. The sail falls a bit faster
but you
still have to be directly into the wind for a quick fall. The Milwaukee
cordless

right angle drill should do the job. I read that you can lift a person
up the
mast (according to weight) with the Milwaukee drill. I have used a
Craftsman
19.2 volt to lift the main the past few years with fair success but the
batteries go bad fast.

I went with the Strong Track system two years ago, on the advice of my
sailmaker who assured me that for the extra $1k my new sail would fly
up the
mast. It's possible that the new sail is that much heavier than the
stock
Catalina, or I have become that much weaker as the years have rolled
on, but
I have a hard time with the last 2-3 feet of sail hoist. This year if
it
ever stops raining and gets above 45F, I'm going to try the Milwaukee
cordless right angle drill to raise the sail and haul in the jib.

Pat,
You just undid two therapy sessions with my shrink! The crow's decided
that my
mast was the place for them but the anomometer and wind vane bothered
them so
they removed it!
Two trips up the mast and another boat buck to Raymarine and it is back

It just occurred to me that if you put the cotton saturated swab with
the
sailkoat or mclube between the top two sail slides then raising and
lowering
the sail will pull the swab up and down.
The sail would be the track cleaner.
Will have to try this the next time we sail.

I did extensive research before I bought my boat. I checked many
sites with
sailboats for sale... listed the many prices, as well as salt/fresh,
extras
(bimini, A/C, dodger, A/P, radar, anchors, VHF, stereo, M/W, etc),
engine
hours, age of sails, and anything else I thought pertinent. I put this

information on the computer by year of the boat. After I got enough
data, I
could
see a trend and just about guess either the age of the boat or how it
was
equipped by looking at the data.

In your case it will be easier since all you will be looking at are
1996
boats.

All:

A couple of years ago Practical Sailor ran a test on sail track lube.
The winner was a purpose made concoction, but the best buy was "Elmer's
Slide All". This was found to be not quite as immediately effective as
the best performer, but maintained its level of performance long after
the better product needed reapplication. And it's cheap.

I''ve used it both for the sail track and for anything else around the
boat requiring mechanical lubrication like the main hatch.

Jeff:

Don't stop. I am one of the virgins and this bit of info was valued
news
to me. C320 797 arrived from the US on April 04 and now that this weeks
snowfall is gone, I will begin the launch preparation process this
weekend with launch on May 05.

This is one more thing to add to the list. Now if I can figure out
where
each of the stays/shrouds attaches to the mast...

Would it be foolish to suggest a search using such sites as Yacht
World?
This would certainly give you market value for specific markets
although
not necesaairily for yours. You will note that for a model year there
is a minor variance between boats in a general area which can become
more broad when compared to other areas.

You do have to keep in mind that a specific market's values will
depend
on the supply. The many boats in California and Florida certainly
appear
to have lower prices when compared to the single C320, a 1994, on offer
in British Columbia. Then too, a southern salt water boat in the brine
year round will have much more wear and deterioration than a northern
freshwater boat stored under cover for six months of the year.

Considering the variables, I'm not sure that some one can give you one
blanket fair market value for all boats of a certain year. Of course
that's just my 2.366 cents Canadian.

All:

Having recently taken delivery of 797 I am for the first time dealing
with having a starting battery and a large house bank (2 4Ds). The
problem is an effective way to maintain a charge on all of these
batteries. The normal course appears to be leaving the boat connected
to
shore power when tied to the dock.

I am located at a sail club, rather than a marina. There are no
services
at individual slips. Power and water are available only at the service
dock, where your tie up time is expected to be short. Assuming the
boat
has the standard charger and alternator issued in 2001, and with the
starting battery charge at 75% and the house battery charge at 50%,
what
are the shore power/engine charging times that I have to allow to bring
these batteries back to full charge? Does the question make sense?

Hello All,

Why did they buy this boat?

Perusing a site offering a number of
320's for sale, I came across the following
boat description:

"Immaculate and in pristine condition. This yacht
has never been raced, no meal ever been served or
cooked, shower never used. Engine only 222hr.
Complete with dodger, bimini, auto pilot, wind
speed and depth. Please contact our Brighton office."

We experienced a hard grounding two evenings ago while enterring Gordon
Pass in Naples, FL about 1 1/2 hours before an exceptionally low tide
when
there were deep swells after two days of strong NW winds. The wing keel
did fine but the rudder shaft was bent.
Per our diver, the aft top of the rudder now rubs the bottom of the hull
but it is useable. The forward top end of the rudder now has a space of
more than 1/2". The steering gear and shaft look fine above the hull.
We made it to our home port today 65 KMs away -- and am I glad the wheel
does not require so much muscle normally.
The next step is to haul out, drop the rudder, examine the damage in
daylight, and proceed to straighten the shaft or ??

Does anyone have experience with this sort of thing who could outline
the
possibilites and related steps for me?

Thanks, Rollie #182
